I saw the entire show including the opening acts. The day was pretty hot so I was glad when the sun began to set. The Utah Saints were quite impressive soon followed by the ubiquitous Ramones. Joey was in his full splender, moving only his vocal chords the entire show (20 songs in 40 minutes).
I had seen U2 in Albany the year before so I knew what to expect. This time Bono made a telephone call to one of the expensive hotels in Madrid. I am fairly confident only a small percentage of the audience understood the exchange b/c it was entirely in English and dripping with satire. Bono, as usual, was all over the stage and worked the crowd (which was very enthusiastic.)
The two things I remember the most clearly were these. First, I sang the final tune all the way home. It was the old Elvis tune – Can’t Help Falling in Love. Second, I could not believe I bought my ticket the day before. I am pretty sure they did not sell out until the day of the show. There may have been walk ups!
