Larry and Adam (on R in WIRE)

Paul McGuinness (on W in World)

Howie B (on W in Wide)

World Wide WIRE (in all it’s glory)

What is It?
It’s a 30 foot by 5 foot sign which reads “World Wide WIRE” made of black canvas-like material with white lettering. Originally, the letters glowed in the dark, but with it’s travels and people signing on the letters, I’m afraid it may loose it’s luminescence.

You can sign it with silver paint pens. We bought them at a local fabric store, about $3 each. From the last I’ve heard, the original ones I supplied (5) are just about out, so we’ll have to replenish them, or trust other transporters to help out in the meantime. Your best bet would be to bring your own and share.

It’s travelling to as many U2 shows (both in the United States and abroad) as possible for the POPMart Tour

Who Made it and Why?
The banner was an idea of primarily Angie Inboden, [email protected] (Angie’s also in charge of the Wire tags you may have seen on Wire), and a bunch of other Wirelings who got together on IRC to brainstorm about how to meet other Wirelings on tour. The idea was that we would be able to sign the banner, and pass it along from show to show, thus creating a “tangible testimonial to our virtual world.”

I volunteered to make the banner and bought all materials and supplies necessary to create a banner that was both weatherproof and durable enough to sustain over a year’s worth of touring.

The banner made it’s appearance at POPMart’s opening night in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 25, 1997.

We also wanted a way for the fans to communicate with each other and the band so fans were invited to sign their name, leave messages, etc on the banner–sort of like a traveling Windmill Lane Wall.
