Why U2? – Reason #13

whyu2Not too long ago, my wife and I were discussing how U2’s music, with the possible exception of the Unforgettable Fire album, has managed to avoid sounding too much like a product of its times. Out of Control sounds just as vital today as it did 35 years ago, and Pop, if anything, sounds even better today than it did in 1997, when it was at least a few years ahead of its time. This accomplishment is even more impressive when I consider the number of times that the band has reinvented itself, somehow managing to stay competitive with current music and trends while remaining separate from them at the same time. Whether or not lightning can strike again for the band (what would this be, seriously, like the fourth time?) remains to be seen, but they’ve never let me down yet, nor have they given me any reason to believe that they ever will.

Ever since I realized as a kid, while poring over the liner notes of the Bob Marley - Songs of Freedom boxed set, that writing about music was a viable career choice, one of my greatest desires has been to write about U2. The band has been a major part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I'm thrilled to have this opportunity to contribute a little something to the fantastic online community that's been built around the band.
